Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence and correlates of hypertension among class IV (Blue-collar) workers in a medical college of New Delhi. A cross-sectional study, enrolling all the class IV workers of the institute was conducted. Each subject was interviewed for socio-demographic and risk factors like smoking, alcohol intake, salt consumption, family history etc. This was followed by examination for blood pressure and anthropometry. Introduction

Hypertension has assumed epidemic proportions in developing countries like India. It is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The trouble with hypertension is that even though it is easy to diagnose and early control will definitely decrease the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, majority remain asymptomatic and hence undiagnosed.
